Shanti ban is a peaceful place with a huge statue of Lord Buddha in meditating position. Shanti ban has been a main
attraction to local as well as foreign travelers since a large statue of Lord
Buddha was built here on 2002 AD. The statue stands 25 feet tall. The golden
painted statue is visible from the Godavari highway on your right heading
towards Godavari as soon as we cross Kitini.
A peaceful environment at a lap of a forest, through a
village with beautiful scenery of Kathmandu valley in front of your eyes has
been a main attraction. The 25 feet tall Buddha statue itself is an attraction.
The view of villages of Godavari, green fields, hills, trees, forests and then
urbanized Kathmandu is awesome. The steep stairs going uphill to reach the
statue can also be an attraction for some. This place of course is an interest
to people following Buddhism.
Buddhist often visit here for prayers and worshipping Lord
Buddha. People following other religions like Hinduism, Christianity etc. also
visit here to worship and pay respect Lord Buddha. Most of the people visit
this place at Buddha Jayanti. Locals often visit here regularly to worship Lord
Buddha. The view of the statue from the highway itself attract many travelers to
get here. Small children come here to get education. They are taught about Buddhism
here.
To reach this place, you have to head straight towards
Godavari taking Godavari highway from Lagankhel or sathdobato. You go straight
south taking Godavari highway, view of Fulchowki straight on your eye. You pass
Santaneshwor temple on your right and head straight. Once you cross Taukhel and
reach Kitini, the statue you clearly visible on your right at lap of a forest.
Follow the Godavari highway and before you reach Godavari Bus stand, the last bus
stand, almost 100 meters ahead, a road is your right. Take that road through
houses, can be a muddy road on rainy days. Go through a jungle and then you
reach a village. A village where most of the family is from Tamang community. Go
through the village after 15 to 20 minutes of walk you will find the stair on
your left to walk uphill. Make sure you don’t miss the starting of the stairs on
your left or else the road will take you back to Taukhel. You now are finally
at a peaceful place with a huge statue of Lord Buddha.
